EGW’s Angel

by Daniel J.M. Galpin

Those in the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) movement, understand clearly the meaning of EGW, while Christians may not. EGW stands for Ellen G. White, which is the SDA's prophetess born in the 1800s. According to the SDA Fundamental Beliefs #18, “her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction”, much like the Bible is to Christians. The SDA do claim Sola Scriptura, which means by Scripture alone, yet according to SDA, EGW gives them clearer understanding of what the Scripture actually means. After much study by the founders of SDA, EGW made clear any area of Scripture where there was confusion. They trusted her for various reasons, which are beyond the scope and intention of this writing, therefore when she said an angel of God spoke to her they believed.

Scripture tells us God does speak to us: various individuals at various times throughout history; we know from many verses, angels have spoken for God. Scripture instructions us to test every Spirit for not all Spirits are from God. The test is Scripture, if anyone tells us they have heard a word from God and they proclaim to speak for God as EGW did, then we are to match what they say with Scripture and if they contradict Scripture, we are NOT to listen or believe them, however if they agree with Scripture, we can heard what they have to say and consider it. This is the basis of our testing, which is not a one time test; if someone claims to speak for God and does not contradict Scripture regarding what they say, this does not mean we blindly believe everything else the person says. We are to test everything they say each time they say God spoke to them and if ever they are wrong, even once, when they say God told them what to say, then we are to reject ALL of what they say or have ever said! Below are verses by which to test:

So did EGW, by way of her angel, speak for God? If so, we need to follow what she said God said. However, if EGW did not speak for God, yet claimed to, who did she actually speak for? Additionally, if she did not speak for God, we are to reject any and all that she said. How can we know? Apply the test of Scripture already stated.

We know EGW was a mortal being as you or I, she was born, lived and died. We know we can make errors, as mortals, in what we say or how we understand Scripture, including EGW. We know God does not make errors. Therefore we are not to test every word EGW said or wrote because she could have been wrong about this or that. We are to test ONLY what EGW said when and/or if she said God told her what to say because God does not make errors and she would merely be repeating to us, what God said to her through her angel.

First let's look at who EGW says she was and what she says about her writings. The SDA has referenced her writings similar to how Christians have referenced the Bible. The Testimonies referred to by EGW are the Testimonies For The Church, nine volumes; she wrote much more, which she says are instructions from the Lord:

We see from the above quotes of EGW, she clearly believed God directed her in the writings of her books over the 60 years she wrote them and the books are God's instruction for His people (Christians). She stated the testimonies God gave her will NEVER contradict God's Word. She said all her books will stand the test of investigation, that is to test her words with Scripture and one would not find contradiction between them, and if her words are not from God, they are from Satan. Let's see the results. The list is not inclusive, of things EGW has said God said to her through her angel or by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Remember, EGW need only be wrong once when relaying God's Message, as God gave it to her, which is different then trying to understand Scripture on her own, to be considered a false prophetess and therefore be rejected completely and entirely as a spokesperson for God., Twelve statements have been listed in honor of the twelve disciples:

EGW The Bible Match?
The kingdom of grace was instituted immediately after the fall of man, when a plan was devised for the redemption of the guilty race GC88 347.2} AND {AG 23.2} Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. (1Pe 1:20) CONTRADICT
He then made known to the angelic host that a way of escape had been made for lost man. He told them that He had been pleading with His Father, and had offered to give His life a ransom, to take the sentence of death upon Himself. {EW 149.2} According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love (Eph 1:4) CONTRADICT
Satan, who is the father of lies, deceived Adam in a similar way, telling him that he need not obey God, that he would not die if he transgressed the law {EV 598.1} And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. (1Tim 2:14) CONTRADICT
EGW: (ANGEL) "An angel is seen by the scoffing multitude descending from heaven clothed with brightness like the lightning. He closes that massive outer door, and takes his course upward to heaven again {3SP 68.2.} AND God had shut it, and God alone could open it {PP 98.2} And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in. (Gen 7:16) CONTRADICT: NOTE: EGW contradicts herself this time
There He honored Elijah by sending food to him morning and evening by an angel of heaven {3T 288.2} And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there... And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook. The Saviour's life of obedience maintained the claims of the law; it proved that the law could be kept in humanity {DA 308.4}" I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. (Gal 2:21) CONTRADICT
To obey the commandments of God is the only way to obtain His favor {1TT 452.2} AND {AG 38.4} AND ST April 1, 1880, Art. A, par. 30} But without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (Heb 11:6) CONTRADICT: NOTE: EGW said her 1T-9T (Testimonies) would NEVER contradict
Man, who has defaced the image of God in his soul by a corrupt life, cannot, by mere human effort, effect a radical change in himself. He must accept the provisions of the gospel; he must be reconciled to God through obedience to his law and faith in Jesus Christ {4T 294.2} For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Eph 2:8-9) CONTRADICT: NOTE: EGW said her 1T-9T (Testimonies) would NEVER contradict
Those who accept the Saviour, however sincere their conversion, should never be taught to say or feel that they are saved. ... Those who accept Christ, and in their first confidence say, I am saved, are in danger of trusting to themselves {COL 155.1} AND {Mar 236.2} AND We are never to rest in a satisfied condition, and cease to make advancement, saying, “I am saved.” When this idea is entertained, the motives for watchfulness, for prayer, for earnest endeavor to press onward to higher attainments, cease to exist. No sanctified tongue will be found uttering these words till Christ shall come, and we enter in through the gates into the city of God.{RH June 17, 1890, par. 8} And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (1Jn 5:11-13) CONTRADICT
The pope has changed the day of rest from the seventh to the first day. He has thought to change the very commandment that was given to cause man to remember his Creator. He has thought to change the greatest commandment in the Decalogue and thus make himself equal with God, or even exalt himself above God. {EW 65.1} AND {EXV 53.1} Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days (Col 2:16) AND Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. (Mat 22:37-38) CONTRADICT: NOTE: two contradictions: 1) who changed of the day of rest (pope or God), God's Word says we are not to judge on which day one rests; 2) the greatest commandment is #1 not #4
The enemies of God's law, from the ministers down to the least among them, have a new conception of truth and duty. Too late they see that the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is the seal of the living God" {GC 640.1} In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise (Eph 1:13) CONTRADICT
No man who willfully disregards one principle of the law shall enter the kingdom of heaven. {DA 308.4} AND That is, he shall have no place therein. For he who willfully breaks one commandment, does not, in spirit and truth, keep any of them. "Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." Jam_2:10. {MB 51.2} Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. (Gal 2:16) CONTRADICT: NOTE: Half truth. Yes, breaking one of God's laws breaks them all: this shows our absolute need for Christ's atonement and God's free gift of Salvation, it is not God's demand to enter Heaven.

EGW's abundant contradictions with the Bible have been provided above, while I had only planned on collecting 60, not all listed above, in honor of EGW's 60 years of writing, I've actually exceeded that amount and still I find more!

While I do not wish to question whether or not an angel appeared to EGW, I will give her the benefit of doubt and not claim she lied about it, yet such is possible. Taking her word for it, there is an abundance of error according to Scripture regarding what EGW said God told her, therefore we know according to the test of Scripture, she did not her from or speak for God, neither directly or through her angel. The question then remains, who did she speak for? Scripture gives us a clue of the possibility in the following passages:

By Scripture we are warned of the following:

  1. Even if an angel from heaven comes and gives us a different gospel, that angel from heaven would be accursed!
  2. If a person preaches a false gospel, the person is accursed.
  3. Satan himself can transform himself into an angel of light
  4. Satan's ministers can be transformed into ministers of righteousness
  5. Test, test, test, that which is taught to you, do not merely believe without a test!

It is my hope you the reader will take to heart that which has been written. In addition, there is great evidence that EGW plagiarized much of her writings from other uninspired writers of her day. While plagiarism was not a crime of law in her day as it is today, it nonetheless is known to be wrong morally and especially if you claim what your are writing has come from God. It makes EGW a liar, to claim what she wrote had come from God when it came for other humans, as well as making her a plagiarist. She not only failed to test of one who speaks for God regarding contradicting Scripture, she also took from someone else and claimed it was from God, had dreams / visions of events to come that did not come to pass, all of which are beyond the scope of this article, however define her, according to Scripture, as a false prophet regardless of how she and others perceive her. Rom 3:4 “God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.”

Test it and see if it is true! Test those that lead you spiritually! I am heavy of heart for the SDA. They have not done as the Bereans: Act 17:10-11 “And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. (11) These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so”. Therefore they have fallen into deception, believing they are worshiping God, while they are highly possibility worshiping Satan instead!
